Smoke Gets In Your Eyes Book Giveaway

Starting today, the Santa Clara City Library is giving away free copies of the book "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" by Caitlin Doughty (while supplies last). This book will be the focal point of our Book-to-Action programs happening later this month and we want to give you a chance to read it so you can join the conversation. Just stop by any of the libraries and ask for a copy.

Smoke Gets in Your Eyes is an irreverent memoir of a young woman who takes a job in a crematorium and finds purpose in life by caring for those who have reached the end of theirs. With gallows humor and a strong stomach, she confronts how modern society relates to death, the concept of a “good” death, and how death acceptance can help people prepare for the end of their lives and find peace.

We invite you to read, discuss, and participate in a number of upcoming programs that will give us an opportunity to address this often taboo, yet vitally important topic:

March 26th - Being Mortal screening and discussion with Kaiser Permanente

March 27 - Smoke Gets in Your Eyes book discussion

March 28 - The Cost of Dying (w/ Lisa Krieger, SJ Mercury News journalist)

March 31st - Mission City Memorial Park cemetery tour (w/ Mary Boyle, local history/genealogy librarian)
noon at Mission City Memorial Park

April 5th - Hospice and Palliative Care discussion (w/ Hospice of the Valley)

April 6th - Death Cafe (w/ The Centre for Living with Dying)

Book-to-Action builds on the traditional book club concept, but in addition to providing an opportunity to collectively read and discuss a book, Book-to-Action enables readers to put their new-found knowledge into action by engaging in volunteer opportunities related to the book's topic.
