Santa Clara, CA – Silicon Valley Power’s (SVP) green power program, Santa Clara Green Power, has once again been honored as one of the Top 10 utility green power programs in the nation --- placing on  three of the four national top 10 green power lists that recognize leadership in the voluntary renewable energy space. This is the third year in a row the program was recognized for three top honors by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), the U.S. Department of Energy's primary national laboratory for renewable energy and energy efficiency research and development, and the twelfth year being recognized by NREL.

“Recognition as an industry leader by NREL is quite an acknowledgement of SVP and our program," said John Roukema, SVP’s Chief Electric Utility Officer. "We are committed to offering a high-quality, 100 percent renewable energy choice for our customers,” Roukema said.

SVP’s first award this year ranked them sixth in the nation for their high green power participation rate --- with 9.35 percent of customers participating in Santa Clara Green Power in 2017 - up from 8.13 percent in 2016. SVP has been recognized year after year for their high percentage of customers who choose to match their home’s or business’s electricity with 100 percent renewable energy, indicating the continued support Santa Clarans show for the program.

The utility was also honored for the high percentage of total electricity sales through the Santa Clara Green Power program, earning it an impressive second place ranking on NREL’s national green power sales rate list. In 2017, 12.15 percent of total utility megawatt-hour (MWh) sales came from Santa Clara Green Power, reflecting the increasing demand for renewable energy in the Santa Clara community. This is more than double the sales rate from the previous year.

Rounding out the three award record, SVP earned another top 10 award as the eighth highest ranked national utility for total green power MWh sales --- selling a whopping 423,808 MWh of green power in 2017 - over twice the green power sales from 2016. “This was a true community effort.  A number of our large commercial customers, including the City of Santa Clara, joined hundreds of small businesses and over 4,500 Santa Clara residents in pledging their commitment to renewable energy through Santa Clara Green Power,” said John Roukema. “The program would not be where it is today without the support of the whole Santa Clara community.”

SVP continues to recognize customers’ growing demand for clean energy and, this year, began offering Santa Clara Green Power participants 100 percent solar energy, 80% of which will come from within the state of California.
