SCPD Visits Behavior Analysis Class at Santa Clara University
SCU's Behavior Analysis class is an upper-division psychology class taught by Professor Matthew Bell. The course focuses on the fundamental principles of learning, particularly the associaiton between a behavior and a consequence, known as operant conditioning.
According to Professional Bell, much of the work in behavior analysis focuses on people with autism. His goal was for his 28 -student class to see beyond that niche to other places where these principles are used.
Officer Higgins and Ozzy were able to showcase the methods used to train police canines, which originates in the understanding of these learning principles. The students had the opportunity to talk with Officer Higgins about his experience with Ozzy, asking questions about both the policing aspects and training. A demonstration of this training was also provided in Buck Shaw Stadium.
