Mission City Memorial Park Cemetery Tour: a New Look at an Old Park
12:00 p.m. – 1:30 p.m. Friday, March 31
Mission City Memorial Park, 420 N. Winchester Blvd., Santa Clara, CA 95050
Meet at the Chapel/Office and park nearby
As part of the “The Smoke Gets In Your Eyes” Book-to-Action series, join Mary Boyle, Local History/Genealogy Librarian, for a tour of one of Santa Clara’s original cemeteries. The City bought the “graveyard” land in 1850-51 and it has gone through many name changes. Since 1972 it has been known as Mission City Memorial Park. Cemeteries are more than simply a final resting place; they are places of historical significance that help document the past and the lives of the people who shaped it. Come join us as we explore the birthplace of Santa Clara’s death space. Copies of Cemeteries of Santa Clara by Bea Lichtenstein will be on sale by the Santa Clara County Historical and Genealogical Society. For information call (408) 615-2900.

Trees in City of Santa Clara Parks
Due to the excessive amounts of rainfall and high wind conditions over the past few months City parks have lost several trees. Trees become stressed when they lose roots due to a lack of oxygen and soil compaction, particularly when the soil is saturated with water. When trees experience saturated soil conditions followed by a dry season, many trees lose their capacity to mine water, and the stability of some trees become compromised. When visiting City parks, take the time to look around at the trees. If you notice trees leaning or if tree roots are lifting the soil under the tree canopy or anything unusual, please contact the Parks Service Center at (408) 615-3770 and we will be happy to visit the park to assess the condition of the tree.
The Parks & Recreation Department continually replaces trees that are removed from City parks. Parks & Recreation typically replace damaged trees with one or two new trees.
