Safe Routes to school

The City of Santa Clara has officially kicked off the third phase of the Safe Routes to School Program. The program will run through 2025 and incorporates 17 schools with 12 continuing from the prior phases and 5 new school starting this phase. The schools that will be participating in this phase of the program include the following:

  • Bowers Elementary School
  • Bracher Elementary School
  • Cabrillo Middle School
  • Don Callejon Elementary/Middle School
  • Haman Elementary School
  • Hughes Elementary School
  • Montague Elementary School
  • Scott Lane Elementary School
  • Sutter Elementary School
  • Washington Elementary School
  • Westwood Elementary School
  • Pomeroy Elementary School
  • Central Park Elementary School
  • Milliken Elementary School
  • Buchser Middle School
  • Laurelwood Elementary School

 

Funding for this program comes from the 2016 Measure B Bicycle and Pedestrian Education and Encouragement Program administered by the Valley Transportation Authority (VTA), State of California Office of Traffic Safety Grant, and City funding. The City has hired the consultant, Safe Moves, to assist with administering the program. 

This program will integrate health, fitness, traffic relief, environmental awareness, and safety. The goal is to ensure that students can safely walk, bike, and roll to and from school to encourage healthy physical activity into their daily routines. The program will include the following notable activities:

  • Safe Routes to School Maps
  • Bicycle and Pedestrian Rodeos
  • Walk and Bike to School Days
  • Bicycle Helmet and Safety Equipment Giveaways
  • Safety Education Curriculum
  • Teach, Staff, and Parent Workshops
