Autumn is a time when school is back in session, and so is the 15-member Youth Commission of the City of Santa Clara. The Commission is a group of young adults ages 12 – 19 residing in Santa Clara who act in an advisory capacity to the Santa Clara City Council. Commissioners meet monthly during the school year to study problems and hold forums on issues, activities and concerns pertaining to Santa Clara youth and teen population, and recommend to the City Council municipal programs and projects that will benefit the Santa Clara youth population.
Since its start in 1995, the Youth Commission has accomplished many goals and introduced new programs and developments such as the Santa Clara Skate Park, Santa Clara Teen Center, and intergenerational programs to benefit youth and seniors. Through a variety of fun activities, Commissioners have raised and awarded thousands of dollars for community service scholarships for high school juniors and graduating seniors. Members also co-host an annual Youth Commissioners leadership conference.
Youth Commission meetings are open to the public and coming to a meeting is a good way to understand its goals and activities. The Youth Commission meets the second Tuesday of every month, September through May, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the Teen Center, 2446 Cabrillo Ave. Applications to serve on the Commission are accepted each spring. For more information call Jennifer Herb at the Teen Center at 615-3741.
Santa Clara is fortunate to have nine volunteer Boards and Commissions. In addition to the Youth Commission, there is the Board of Library Trustees, Civil Service Commission, Cultural Advisory Commission, Historical & Landmarks Commission, International Exchange Commission, Parks & Recreation Commission, Planning Commission and the Senior Advisory Commission. To be placed on a notification list for vacancies on these other Board or Commissions, contact the City Clerk’s Office at 615-2220 or email Clerk@santaclaraca.gov. |
