| Education and Experience |
Education equivalent to completion
of the twelfth grade and at least one of the following experience
or training patterns: three (3) years experience as a journey level
carpenter; two (2) years experience as a building inspector in a municipal
or county inspection jurisdiction; two (2) years experience as a journey
level carpenter plus completion of the State Apprenticeship Program;
one (1) year experience as a journey level carpenter and one (1) year
experience as a building inspector in a municipal or county inspection
jurisdiction; or status and license as a
B-1 contractor in the State of California for a minimum of two (2)
years. |

| License and Certification |
| Possession of a valid California
driver's license. International Conference of Building Officials'
Certification as a Building Inspector and/or Plans Examiner is desirable. |

| Distinguishing Characteristics |
| This is a technical classification
in the classified service responsible for performing specialized work
in the review of plans and specifications and inspection of buildings
and structures for compliance with regulations and codes affecting
and/or administered by the Inspection Division. |

| Typical Duties |
| Checks construction plans
and specifications for compliance with City, State, and related regulations;
inspects buildings and structures to ensure compliance with Local
and State Building Codes; Local Zoning Ordinance, approved plans and
related regulations; provides verbal and written information to plan
designers, builders and the general public regarding applicable building
regulations; investigates complaints and possible violations; issues
discrepancy or stop work orders; prepares material for violation follow-up;
issues permits regulated by the Uniform Administrative Code and other
codes or ordinances administered through the Inspection Division;
and does related work as required. |

| Knowledge, Skills, and
Abilities |
| Thorough knowledge of the
construction trade, tools, materials and standard practices involved
in building construction and repair work; some knowledge of the Uniform
Building Code; good ability to detect the presence of defects and
faults in building installations and require corrective measures;
good ability to read and interpret building plans and specifications;
good ability to deal tactfully and courteously with individuals in
the design profession, contractors and the general public; good ability
to perform arithmetic computations; satisfactory ability to keep records
and prepare reports. |
