| Education and Experience |
Minimum Requirements: |
- Graduation from high school or possession of a G.E.D.; and
- Four years of recent journey level experience in the building construction trades, including painting, carpentry, plumbing, minor electrical work, building hardware, and/or building security including key and alarm systems.

Desirable Qualifications: |
- Supervisory or lead experience is desirable
|
| License |
Possession of a valid California Class C driver’s license is required. |

| Distinguishing Characteristics |
| This is a working, hands-on management position in the classified service responsible for supervising Building Maintenance Workers, Utility Workers, Custodians, and other staff in the maintenance and repair of City buildings. An incumbent in this class manages, controls, and directs assigned employees by deploying manpower and using appropriate tools and equipment in the most efficient and economical manner commensurate with the scope and complexity of the task at hand. An incumbent in this class exercises independent judgment and discretion not of a routine or clerical nature in evaluating and reporting on the work efforts of subordinates, in recommending the reward or discipline of subordinates, and in resolving employee grievances. |

| Typical Duties |
Each position in this classification may not include all of the duties listed below, nor do the examples cover all duties that may be performed.
Under general supervision: |
- Assigns, organizes, coordinates, reviews and participates in the activities of personnel engaged in the painting, carpentry, plumbing, minor electrical work, building hardware, building security including key and alarm systems, and other skills required for the repair, maintenance, and construction of City buildings
- Uses, maintains, and repairs hand and power tools of the trade
- Inspects work in progress to insure conformance with instructions
- Requisitions, stocks, and assigns necessary supplies and materials
- Maintains time and material records
- Trains and instructs subordinates in maintenance techniques and safety practices
- Processes service requests and investigates service complaints
- Evaluates and reports on the performance of assigned subordinates
- Assists in the preparation of the budget, and
- Performs related duties as assigned

- Standard methods, equipment, and materials used in the building trades, especially carpentry, plumbing, painting, electrical, and floor covering
- Supervisory techniques and methods of motivating subordinates to perform efficiently
- Use, maintenance, and repair of hand and power tools of the trade
- Safety and Environmental practices, procedures, and standards

- Understand , direct, and participate in a wide variety of maintenance and repair work on City buildings
- Plan, assign, supervise, and review the work of maintenance personnel

| Other Requirements |
- Must be able to perform all of the essential functions of the job arrangement
- Incumbents of this class may be assigned to work odd and unusual hours including weekends and holidays.
- Incumbents may also be required to work overtime hours as assigned.
- As a condition of employment, incumbents will be required to be fingerprinted in accordance with State of California law.
