Junior Theater Director (503)
 
Education and Experience
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor degree in theater or approved closely related field, and one year of full-time paid experience in theater with emphasis in children's theater (2,000 hours part-time and/or internship experience is equiva­lent to one year's full-time experience).
 
License
Possession of an appropriate, valid California driver's license is required.
 
Distinguishing Characteristics
This is a management position in the Classified Service responsible for performing supervisory work involving administrative and promo­tional duties and entailing the development and supervision of special community-wide junior theater programs.  An incumbent exercises independent judgment and discretion not of a routine or clerical nature in evaluating and reporting on the work efforts of employees; in recommending to hire, transfer, suspend, lay off, recall, promote, discharge, assign, reward, or discipline other employees; in weighing the economic impact of deploying or directing employees; or in adjusting employees' grievances.
 
Typical Tasks
Under general supervision:  plans and  organizes assigned recrea­tional activities; works with  recreation personnel and volunteers to develop the junior theater programs and classes; interviews and trains temporary personnel and volunteers; assists in planning,  organizing and evaluating City-wide recreational programs; prepares and controls equipment inventory and stock deliveries; inspects and oversees equipment care; interprets departmental policies to the public; develops and prepares various reports; plans special pro­grams; assists in preparing budget recommendations; supervises the use of facilities for participant groups; collects and accounts for fees and charges; and performs other related duties as required.
 
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Good knowledge of modern principles and practices of recreation; good knowledge of children's theater and special events; satisfactory ability to organize and direct the activities of recreation workers and related personnel; satisfactory ability to work cooperatively with fellow employees and the public; and to speak effectively at public gatherings.
 
Supervision Received
Works under the general supervision of the Recreation Superintendent or other supervisor as assigned.
 
Supervision Exercised
Supervises temporary, part-time, and volunteer recreation leadership personnel and other recreation personnel as assigned.
 
Special Conditions
May be required to work unusual hours to meet recreational needs of the general public.
 
Other Requirements
Must be able to perform all of the essential functions of the job assignment.  Candidates hired into this classification will be required to be fingerprinted in accordance with California State Law.
