| Education and Experience |
| Graduation from high school
or equivalent and four (4) years of increasingly responsible experience
involving construction, repair and maintenance of landscaping, swimming
pools and park facilities, at least two (2) years of which shall have
been in a supervisory capacity. |

| License & Certification |
| Possession of a valid California
driver's license is required. Possession of California Department
of Food and Agriculture Qualified Applicator Certificate in Categories
B, C and F is required within one year after appointment. |

| Distinguishing Characteristics |
| This is a management position
in the Unclassified Service responsible for supervising the activities
of the Park Construction and Repair Division of the City's Parks and
Recreation Department. An incumbent in this class exercises independent
judgment and discretion not of a routine or clerical nature in evaluating
and reporting on the work efforts of employees, in recommending to
hire, transfer, suspend, lay off, recall, promote, discharge, assign,
reward or discipline employees in weighing the economic impact of
deploying and/or directing employees, and in adjusting employees'
grievances. |

| Typical Duties |
| Under general direction,
plans, coordinates and supervises the construction and repair of buildings,
playground equipment, athletic fields, swimming pools, picnic areas
and other City park facilities; supervises field repair of hand tools
and power equipment used in maintenance activities; assigns and directs
the work of grounds maintenance personnel; supervises the installation
and repair of walks, athletic fields and courts, playground equipment,
irrigation systems and drainage systems; supervises the construction
and repair of minor facilities, such as restrooms, barbecue pits,
picnic tables and benches; supervises the repair of major structures
such as multi-purpose recreation buildings; reviews with supervisor
plans and specifications of proposed park facilities to insure appropriateness
of plant material and irrigation equipment to be used; investigates
new operational techniques, new materials and equipment to effect
improved and more economical performance in the Parks and Recreation
Department; confers with Department Head to recommend appropriations
for the purchase of materials, supplies and equipment in the preparation
of the annual budget; performs routine purchasing activities to meet
park construction and repair needs; trains assigned personnel in equipment
operation and safety procedures; maintains time records on assigned
personnel; evaluates and reports on the performance of assigned personnel;
and does other work as required. |

| Knowledge, Skills, and
Abilities |
| Thorough knowledge of: equipment
and tools commonly used in park and recreation facility construction
and repair; park construction methods and procedures, including the
planting and care of trees, shrubs, flowers and lawns. Working knowledge
of supervisory techniques and methods of motivating staff to perform
effectively and efficiently. Good ability to: plan, assign, supervise
and review the work of park maintenance personnel; instruct assigned
personnel and to resolve employee grievances; and maintain cooperative
working relationships with others. |
