Park Maintenance Crafts Worker (620)
 
Education and Experience
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Graduation from high school or possession of a G.E.D.,  and
  • Three (3) years of full time, paid experience in construction or maintenance work in public facilities or buildings at a sub‑journey level in at least two (2) of the following trades: carpentry, painting, plumbing, masonry, locksmithing or electrical.
Possible Substitutions:
  • Experience as a Grounds Maintenance Worker III, Street Maintenance Worker III, Water and Sewer Maintenance Worker II or Building Maintenance Worker  with the City of Santa Clara may be substituted on a one (1) year for one (1) year basis for the required experience.
 
License
  • Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license is required at time of application and for the duration of employment.
  • Possession of National Recreation and Park Association – National Playground Safety Institute Certified Playground Safety Inspector Certificate is required within twelve (12) months of appointment. 
  • Maintenance of the required certificate is a condition of continued eligibility to hold status in this position. 
 
Distinguishing Characteristics

Incumbents in this classification are primarily responsible for the lead supervision of a small crew of workers and participation in the construction, rehabilitation and maintenance of park structures and facilities.  Sub-journey level work is required in two (2) or more of these skilled trades: carpentry, painting, plumbing, masonry, electrical and locksmithing.

 
Typical Duties

Each position in this classification may not include all the duties listed below, nor do the examples cover all duties that may be performed. 

  • Under general supervision:  Assigns, supervises, and participates in the construction, and  maintenance park facilities and community buildings;
  • Supervises and participates in: the field activities of employees involved in the maintenance and improvement of park facilities and community buildings
  • Supervises and participates in:  the painting of park buildings and related improvements, facility doors and locksmithing;
  • Supervises and participates in: the maintenance of park and pathway lighting fixtures, repair of masonry structures, concrete sidewalks, and masonry park facilities;;
  • Supervises and participates in: the maintenance and installation of park playground facilities
  • Maintains written records for lock and keyway controls, graffiti removal, cost recovery of park vandalism, and tools, inventory, and purchasing records;
  • Conducts periodic inspection and certification of playground facilities to ensure compliance with National Playground Safety Institute Standards;
  • Evaluates and reports on the performance of assigned subordinate personnel;
  • As a general maintenance worker, performs all of the duties of a Performs all of the duties of a Grounds Maintenance Worker III and Building Maintenance Worker; and
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
 
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Standard methods, materials, tools and equipment used in these building trades: carpentry, painting, plumbing, masonry and locksmithing;
  • General construction and maintenance methods and procedures including the use of power  equipment, tools, and material;
  • Welding, cutting, or various skills of metal fabrication;
  • Environmental and safety practices, procedures, and standards as applied to general construction, maintenance, and repair of buildings and park facilities;
  • Custodial and building maintenance practices;
  • Proper and safe mechanical and power equipment and tool operation including general construction, tractor, forklift,  and maintenance equipment;
  • Masonry, cement, and concrete work;
  • Carpentry, painting, cement work, power equipment and tool repair; and
  • English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation.
 
Ability to:
  • Read and interpret construction drawings and specifications;
  • Evaluate situations, identify problems, make logical decisions and follow through on resolution;
  • Perform tasks without being told, working in the interest of the city; self starter;
  • Verbally communicate clearly, tactfully and effectively with staff and the general public;
  • Follow and carry out written and oral instructions;
  • Communicate clearly and effectively in writing by using correct english grammar, spelling and punctuation;
  • Respond in writing to staff and general public;
  • Maintain written records and data records of maintenance activities, keying, vandalism, facility inspection logs, and account receivables;
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work;
  • Work in a team-based environment and achieve common goals;
  • Plan, assign, train, supervise and review the work of maintenance staff;
  • Provide technical and functional supervision and training to staff;
  • Respond appropriately to conflicts/complaints/management escalations from other departments;
  • Lead or influence others positively to achieve desired results;
  • Effectively handle multiple priorities, organize workload and meet strict deadlines; and
  • Bend, stoop, reach, carry, crawl, climb and lift as necessary to perform assigned duties.
 
Supervision Received
Works under the general direction of a Parks Supervisor or Foreman/Forewoman or other supervisor as assigned.
 
Supervision Exercised
Supervises Grounds Maintenance Workers and other assigned personnel.
 
Special Conditions
Incumbents in this classification participate in rotational work shifts and must have the ability to work, as assigned, on schedules that may include Saturdays, Sundays, holidays, and non-traditional work hours; and a willingness to work overtime as required. Additionally, Incumbents of this classification may be required to work unusual hours in emergency situations and be available on an on‑call basis as assigned.
 
Other Requirements
Must be able to perform all the essential functions of the job assignment.  All candidates will be required to pass a City background investigation, which will include fingerprinting.
