Recreation Superintendent

Education and Experience
Education equivalent to graduation from college with a major in recreation or an approved allied field, and two years experience in a class comparable to that of Recreation Supervisor in the Santa Clara City service.
 
License
Possession of a valid California Driver's License is required.
 
Distinguishing Characteristics
This is a management position in the Unclassified Service responsible for overseeing the activities of the Recreation Division of the Parks and Recreation Department. An incumbent in this class exercises independent judgment and discretion not of a routine or clerical nature in evaluating and reporting on the work efforts of employees, in recommending to hire, transfer, suspend, lay off, recall, promote, discharge, assign, reward or discipline employees, in weighing the economic impact of deploying and/or directing employees, and in adjusting employees' grievances.
 
Typical Duties
Organizes and directs a well rounded recreation program, which includes: playground activities for elementary, teenage, and adult groups; supervises recreational personnel; assists in overall planning, promoting and directing a program of recreational activities, in recreational facility layout and development, in recruitment, selection and training of personnel, in purchasing material and supplies, in coordination of recreation activities; and in preparation of the recreational activities budget; prepares reports, correspondence, news releases and other material assigned; makes talks to recreational groups as directed; surveys recreational and park needs and makes recommendations; and does related work as required.
 
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of the objective, methods and techniques of planned recreation programs; knowledge of major and minor sports, and the recreational activities suitable for children, juveniles and adults; knowledge of community recreational resources; knowledge of playground safety and first aid methods; knowledge of the fundamentals of Administration with respect to personnel, program planning and supervision; ability to direct the activities of recreation workers and supervisors; ability to organize and direct a City-wide program of activities, sports and special events, including setting up athletic tournaments, leagues, etc., ability to work cooperatively with others and to speak effectively at public gatherings.
 
Supervision Received
Works under the general direction of the Assistant Parks and Recreation Director.
 
Supervision Exercised
Supervises Recreation Supervisors, Recreation Coordinators, Pool Managers and other recreational personnel.
 
Special Conditions
May be required to work unusual hours to meet recreational needs of the general public.
