Water Meter & Service Supervisor (906)
 
Education and Experience
Minimum Requirements:
  • Graduation from high school or possession of a GED; and
  • Four (4) years of work experience with a water utility, including at least two (2) years as a Water Service Technician or equivalent
License
Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license is required.
 
Certification
Possession of the following certificates is required within twelve (12) months of, and for the duration of, appointment:
  • A valid Water Distribution Operator's Certificate (Grade D-2 or above) issued by the California Department of Health Services; and
  • A valid Backflow Prevention Tester Certificate issued by the California-Nevada Section of the American Water Works Association or the Foundation for Cross Connection Control and Hydraulic Research
 
Distinguishing Characteristics
This is a supervisory position in the classified service, responsible for supervising Water Service Technicians in the maintenance and testing of water meters, backflow prevention devices, fire services and the handling of customer complaints and service requests.  An incumbent in this classification exercises independent judgment and discretion beyond a routine or clerical nature in recommending to hire, transfer, suspend, terminate, recall, promote, discharge, assign, reward, or discipline other employees; weighing the economic impact of deploying or directing employees; and adjusting employee grievances.
 
Typical Duties

Each position in this classification may not include all the duties listed below, nor do the examples cover all duties that may be performed.

Under direction:

  • Assigns, reviews, trains, and supervises the work of personnel engaged in the maintenance and testing of water meters, backflow prevention devices, fire services and the handling of customer complaints and service requests
  • Maintains testing, cleaning and installation equipment of the Meter Shop
  • Maintains records of all equipment assigned
  • Receives, stores, and issues water meters and backflow prevention devices
  • Maintains accurate computerized records of water meters, backflow prevention devices, and fire services installed, tested or maintained
  • Ensures compliance with state and federal worker safety regulations
  • Performs related duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Considerable knowledge of:
  • Methods, tools, materials, equipment, and techniques used in the maintenance and testing of water meters, backflow prevention devices, and fire services
  • Various types of water meters, backflow prevention devices, and fire services used by City's Water Utility
  • State and federal worker safety regulations
Considerable ability to:
  • Supervise subordinate staff
  • Work efficiently and safely
  • Keep accurate records and maintain adequate supplies, parts, and equipment
  • Follow oral and written instructions
  • Deal courteously and tactfully with the general public
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
  • Work in a team-based environment and achieve common goals
Supervision Received
Works under general supervision of the Assistant Water Superintendent - Maintenance.
 
Supervision Exercised
Supervises Water Service Technicians or other assigned personnel.
 
Other Requirements
  • May be required to work shifts, weekends and unusual hours in the performance of duties and emergency situations and be available on an "on-call" basis
  • Must be able to perform all of the essential functions of the job assignment
