My neighbors park their boat on the street and on their front lawn. Is this legal? A: The Code of the City of Santa Clara restricts the parking of any vehicle, including boats, on any street or alley for more than a consecutive period of 72 hours. It also prohibits the parking of vehicles for any length of time on the required landscaped areas of residential properties, including front yards. Vehicles may only be parked on areas surfaced with all-weather materials such as concrete, asphalt, brick, stone, or gravel. To report vehicles that have been parked in excess of 72 consecutive hours in one location, or to report inoperable vehicles on the street, call the Abandoned Vehicle Abatement number at (408) 615-4778. Information from calls to the Abandoned Vehicle Hotline is forwarded to a Community Service Officer in the Police Department for follow up. To report illegally parked vehicles on landscaped areas of residential properties or for more information on this topic, call the City’s Code Enforcement Office at (408) 615-2460.
How do I get a pothole repaired? A: You may call the Street Dept. Corporation Yard at (408) 615-3080 to report a pothole. Dispatchers will take the information and pass it on to the appropriate staff for scheduling of repair work. We try to repair potholes within the next business day. If you have a concern regarding ongoing excavations in the street, you can call the Engineering Department, Field Services at (408) 615-3000 for assistance. If you are concerned about existing pavement damage, please call the Street Dept. Corporation Yard at (408) 615-3080 and our maintenance staff will investigate to determine who is responsible for repairing the damage.
Every weekend a bunch of signs get posted at the corner of my street. Some of the signs are for open houses and others are for garage sales. Are these signs legal? A: If the signs are posted on private property with the permission of the property owner, they are legal. But if they are posted on public property including sidewalks, power poles or light standards, they are prohibited. The City Code permits the City to remove signs posted on City property. The removed signs are held for at least 10 days while attempts are made to inform the owner of their location. The City may recover all the costs associated with the removal of the signs from the owner of the signs. Illegal signs are not just a nuisance. Stapling or nailing signs to power poles can present a hazard to workers who may be required to service the pole. Signs posted on public property can be reported to the Street Department at (408) 615-3080.
My neighbor leaves his garbage cart in front of his house, sometimes at the curb or in the gutter, for days after our curbside collection day. It doesn't look very nice. Is this allowed? A: No, it is prohibited by a City Ordinance. Garbage and Clean Green carts and recycling bins should not be left out after they are emptied. They should be put away, to the side or rear yard, on same day that collection occurs. Contact the Street Department at 615-3080 to report container storage violations. The City's Nuisance Ordinance also prohibits the storing of furniture, inoperable vehicles, or lumber/salvage materials in the front yard.
