Seeking Residents to Serve
The City is seeking residents who may be interested in serving on any of the City's nine boards or commissions, or a City committee. Your name can be placed on a mailing list, and you will be notified when vacancies occur. The commissions/committee are: Board of Library Trustees, Civil Service Commission, Cultural Advisory Commission, Historical & Landmarks Commission, International Exchange Commission, Parks & Recreation Commission, Planning Commission, Senior Advisory Commission, Youth Commission, and the Housing Rehabilitation Loan Committee. In some instances, appointed commission/committee members have opportunities to attend state or national conferences; receive special training; and attend, participate, or organize special events. For example, members of the Civil Service Commission, on a rotating basis, attend the League of California Cities Personnel Department Conference; and Parks & Recreation Commissioners organize and participate in the annual Art & Wine Festival.
People have differing reasons for wanting to serve as commissioners. "Being a member of the Historical & Landmarks Commission is a fun and stimulating experience; in fact, it has been one of the most rewarding experiences in my life. I recommend joining one of the City Commissions," says former Commissioner Don Ritchey. Commissioner Marjorie Banko echo's Don's recommendation. "Serving on the Senior Advisory Commission is indeed a privilege. It provides a great opportunity to participate in community affairs as well as gaining a broader understanding of the City government," Commissioner Banko stated. "Becoming a Commissioner allowed me to get more involved in Santa Clara," says Ed Ortega, former Parks & Recreation Commissioner. He added, "I like recommending park improvements to benefit the entire community."
