Early Literacy

As a childcare provider, it is crucial to provide the children in your care with early literacy experiences to guarantee their successful long term intellectual and language development. Resources are readily available both for use during the childcare day, and to support parents continuation of the process at home.

Through the Raising A Reader program childcare providers can promote a love of reading to parents and their preschoolers to foster healthy brain development and early literacy skills.  High-quality, age-appropriate books in English and Spanish for children (zero to five years of age) are loaned through preschool teachers and daycare providers who distribute the book bags, filled with bi-lingual books, and Read Aloud videos / DVDs in nine languages, to their client families. Reading Is Fundamental is a leading advocate for early literacy in the United States. Its "Literacy Resources" include suggestions for turning everyday activities into enjoyable learning experiences and also offers activities and booklists. The Leading to Reading pages will help childcare providers develop the language skills of their infants, toddlers, and preschoolers through online literacy activities. Leading to Reading is also available in Spanish. Let's Read as a Family/Leamos en Familia includes activities for parents or caregivers and children to do together and tips (including video clips) on making reading a part of daily family life.
