Santa Clara, Calif. – December 20, 2012 –
Silicon Valley Power (SVP), the City of Santa Clara’s municipal electric utility, announced today that Applied Materials, Inc., the global leader in providing manufacturing solutions for the semiconductor, flat panel display and solar photovoltaic industries, will increase its purchase of clean renewable energy to match 100% of the electricity used at its Santa Clara headquarters. Applied Materials began purchasing green power in 2007 and is now SVP’s largest purchaser of Santa Clara Green Power, a renewable energy program that provides 100 percent clean wind and solar power resources.
With an annual renewable power commitment of 45 million kilowatt-hours, the company’s Santa Clara facility is now a Leadership Club member of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Green Power Partnership for its Santa Clara headquarters. Applied Materials’ green power commitment to 100% of its electricity use at its headquarters represents a five-fold increase over last year.
“Applied Materials continues to demonstrate its leadership in sustainability, and we are proud to have the company as a long-term and active partner in the Santa Clara Green Power program,” said Larry Owens, Division Manager of Silicon Valley Power.
Using EPA calculations, Applied Materials’ clean power commitment is projected to help avoid more than 31,132 metric tons of carbon dioxide-equivalent emissions, a key greenhouse gas, which is equal to the annual greenhouse gas emissions from 6,104 passenger cars, or the carbon sequestered annually by more than 6,638 acres of pine or fir forests. With its commitment, the company’s purchase of Santa Clara Green Power is now the equivalent of more than the annual output of 14 large-scale wind turbines.
"Conventional electricity usage is the nation's single largest industrial source of greenhouse gas emissions in the U.S.," said Blaine Collison, Director of EPA’s Green Power Partnership. "By increasing its commitment to purchase green power, Applied Materials will reduce its carbon footprint and help advance the market for cleaner, renewable resources.”
“Applied Materials is honored to be recognized as a corporate leader in using energy responsibly throughout our business to reduce impacts to the environment and in minimizing greenhouse gas emissions by giving preference to renewable energy sources,” said Phil Naughton, Corporate Energy Manager at Applied Materials. “We are proud to be making this investment to help grow our business responsibly and in a sustainable fashion.” About Applied Materials
