Posted Date: 8/25/2014

Idiot String, the collaboration between San Francisco theatremakers Joan Howard and Rebecca Longworth, will bring O Best Beloved, their award-winning stage adaptation of Rudyard Kipling’s Just-So Stories to Santa Clara on Saturday, September 6 at 2:00pm. The performance is sponsored by the City of Santa Clara Library and the Santa Clara Players.

O Best Beloved is touring parks and public spaces around the Bay Area this August and September aboard its own mobile stage, a folding contraption called FluxWagon. The ensemble banter with the audience while they set up the stage before the show, and perform six of Kipling’s witty stories complete with original music, eccentric characters, and scenery full of visual puns. The show is performed by six actors who have all had a hand in adapting the script, and who a variety of roles and perform original songs inspired by the poems that Kipling wrote to accompany each story.

The Santa Clara performance will begin at 2pm outside the Santa Clara Players’ Theatre on Don Avenue near Warburton, on the grounds of the Triton Museum of Art. Audiences are encouraged to bring a picnic blanket or lawn chair, and can arrive early to watch the ensemble’s antics while they set up the stage. O Best Beloved is performed outdoors and free to the public, though the ensemble pass a hat for donations. No tickets or reservations are necessary. More details about the play and a full schedule of Bay Area performances are available at

Kipling wrote the Just-So Stories for his own best beloveds--his two small daughters, who insisted that he tell the stories the same way every time, or “just so.”
