In 1982, long-time Santa Clara resident Cleo Stuckrath, concerned about the possible closure of the Santa Clara Senior Center’s Health and Wellness Program, established the Santa Clara Women’s League and wrote and produced a melodrama that year, starring local talent, and raising money so that the program could continue. Through the years, “Showtime” has raised over a quarter of a million dollars to retain and support nursing services at the City’s Senior Center, while providing the community with some good old-fashioned entertainment and annual fun for the entire family.
Each year, the Santa Clara Women's League again sponsors Showtime. The annual production raises funds for the Senior Center's Health and Wellness Program.
On March 2, 3, and 4, 2012, the Santa Clara Women's League will celebrate the 30th anniversary of Showtime by presenting the original melodrama penned by Cleo Stuckrath for the first Showtime produced in 1982 -- "Penelope of Pruneyard Patch." The production will once again raise funds for the Senior Center's Health and Wellness Program. Showtime 2012 will feature an evening of fun and entertainment -- a thrilling, old-time melodrama, an olio packed with local talent, refreshments, and lots of fabulous raffle prizes, including two $500 cash prizes! Come cheer for the hero, boo and hiss the mean ol' villain and have an all-around good time! Performances start at 7:00 p.m. on March 2 and 3, and at 2:00 p.m. on March 4 at the Community Recreation Center (doors open 90 minutes before show). Tickets can be purchased starting January 2, 2012 at the Community Recreation Center (969 Kiely Boulevard) and at the Senior Center (1303 Fremont Street) during regular business hours. Tickets are $7 for Saturday and Sunday performances, and only $5 for Friday performance (1982’s ticket price!). For more information, go to www.santaclarawomensleague.org or call (408) 247-5927.
