Serve On A Commission To Contribute To Quality Of Life

Residents who would like to personally contribute to the quality of life in the City of Santa Clara are encouraged to apply to serve on any of the City’s Board or Commissions. Commissions include the Board of Library Trustees, Civil Service Commission, Cultural Advisory Commission, Historical & Landmarks Commission, International Exchange Commission, Parks & Recreation Commission, Planning Commission, Senior Advisory Commission and Youth Commission. There is also a Housing Rehabilitation Loan Committee, ADA Advisory Committee, Bicycle Advisory Committee and other committee opportunities to serve.

The City of Santa Clara currently has vacancies on four Commissions: Senior Advisory Commission; International Exchange Commission; Cultural Advisory Commission, and the Planning Commission.

The deadlines to receive applications for each commission, interview dates and times are as follows:

Interviews for Board of Library Trustees, Cultural Advisory Commission, Parks & Recreation Commission and Housing Rehabilitation Loan Committee will occur in the City Hall reception lobby. Interviews for the Civil Service Commission and Planning Commission will occur in the Council Chambers during the regularly scheduled Council meeting.

  • The 7-member Senior Advisory Commission advises the City Council on matters affecting people age 50 and older in Santa Clara. The Commission generally meets on the 4th Monday of each month at 10 a.m. at the Santa Clara Senior Center.
  • The 7 member International Exchange Commission acts in an advisory capacity to the City Council on matters pertaining to the City’s two Sister Cities – Coimbra, Portugal and Izumo, Japan – and other matters related to international exchange. The Commission generally meets on the 1st Tuesday of each month.
  • The 7-member Cultural Advisory Commission acts in an advisory capacity to the City Council in matters pertaining to the purchase and placement of public art, recommendations on potential City-funding of community groups, and organizes annual events such as the Summer Concerts in the Park series, the biennial Indoor Sculpture Exhibition, Franklin Square Street Dance, and the biennial Art in the Air Banner Display on El Camino Real. The commission generally meets on the first Monday of each month at 7:30 p.m. in the City Hall Staff Conference Room.
  • The 7-member Planning Commission advises the City Council on matters regarding the physical development of Santa Clara, and makes recommendations with respect to land subdivisions, zoning as prescribed by ordinance, and more. The Commission generally meets one Wednesday per month at 7 p.m. in City Council Chambers.
