Enroll in CERT Training
Class Begins Next Week
Posted Date: 7/10/2014 12:30 PM

The Santa Clara Fire Department is offering a Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training class next week. This is a very comprehensive and informative class which allows citizens to become more prepared for disasters which may strike our community.

In the event of a large disaster such as an earthquake, the normal first responders such as Fire, Police and EMS will be overwhelmed by the amount of emergencies. As a result citizens will have to rely on each other for help.

The CERT program presents citizens with the facts about what to expect following a major disaster and the importance of preparation. It also trains students in critical life saving skills with an emphasis on decision making, safety, and doing the greatest good for the greatest number of people. The 21-hour class provides training in areas which include disaster preparedness, fire extinguisher use, medical care in disasters, search and rescue, and disaster psychology. Students will participate in both classroom lectures as well as hands-on training in all areas.

The schedule for the upcoming class is:

Tuesday July 15, 6 PM – 9 PM, Emergency Preparedness
Thursday July 17, 6PM – 9PM, Fire Control, Hazmat, Utilities
Tuesday July 22, 6PM – 9PM, Disaster Medicine Part 1
Thursday July 24, 6PM – 9PM, Disaster Medicine Part 2
Thursday July 31, 6PM – 9PM, Search and Rescue
Saturday August 2, 9AM – 4PM, Terrorism, Psychology, Disaster Simulation Exercise

All classes will be held at the Santa Clara Fire Department Training Center, 1900Walsh Ave. Students will be issued some safety equipment a helmet, gloves, goggles, safety vest, and pack. There is a nominal fee of $25.00 per person.

To enroll in this class please contact the Santa Clara Fire Department Training Division at 408-615-4940. Additional information can be found at www.santaclaraca.gov/CERT.

If you are unable to attend the class which is starting next week, an additional class will be starting on October 15, 2014.

The lives of your family and neighbors may depend on your ability to make the right decisions in times of need. This is an amazing opportunity to learn critical skills from highly skilled professional responders.
