Applied Materials Commits to Largest Green Power Purchase Through Local Utility

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – March 27, 2007 – Applied Materials, the global leader in nanomanufacturing technology solutions, has increased its commitment to Santa Clara Green Power, a renewable energy program sponsored by Silicon Valley Power (SVP), the City of Santa Clara’s municipal electric utility, by nearly four times.  The purchase of 8,220 megawatt-hours (MWh) annually of clean renewable energy, derived from new wind and solar generation sources in California, makes Applied Materials the largest corporate partner enrolled in Santa Clara Green Power.  Last year, Applied Materials purchased clean renewable energy equivalent to 70 percent of the output of one large-scale wind turbine on an annual basis, or 2,279 MWh’s.

Applied Materials’ purchase is part of the company’s comprehensive environmental responsibility programs and a response to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Fortune 500 Green Power Challenge, and reflects the company’s dedication to enhancing economic and social conditions around the world.  Applied Materials’ clean energy commitment is equivalent to 2.6 times the annual output of one large-scale wind turbine and prevents the release of more than 3,736 tons of carbon dioxide, a key greenhouse gas, annually.  The environmental benefit of a purchase this size is equivalent to planting 1,107 acres of forest or removing 782 cars from the road for a year.

“Applied Materials is honored to be the largest corporate partner in the Santa Clara Green Power program,” says Norm Armour, Corporate Vice President of Corporate Asset Services for Applied Materials.  “We are committed to demonstrating practical environmental leadership in industry and the conservation of natural resources.  Silicon Valley Power’s renewable energy program provides a logical opportunity for us to make a difference.”

By increasing participation in Santa Clara Green Power, Applied Materials now leads the growing circle of other large businesses in Santa Clara that support renewable energy, including Agilent Technologies, Cisco, Yahoo!, Westfield Valley Fair and Santa Clara University. In addition, more than 120 small businesses and 2,800 households are participating.

“We are very pleased with the growing participation of large businesses in the Santa Clara Green Power program,” says Joyce Kinnear, Public Benefit Program Manager for SVP.  “Corporate leadership in green power programs helps to support development of California’s clean energy resources.”

On behalf of Applied Materials, SVP will purchase renewable energy credits from newly constructed wind farms and solar photovoltaic projects located within California.  A portion of Applied Materials’ Santa Clara Green Powerratewill support new solar facilities in the City of Santa Clara, such as the Haman Elementary School project, helping to bring new installations into the community.
