Applied Materials Commits to Renewable Energy With Santa Clara Green Power

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – March 7, 2006 – Silicon Valley Power (SVP), the City of Santa Clara’s municipal electric utility, announces today that Applied Materials will participate in its renewable energy program, Santa Clara Green PowerApplied Materials, a Santa Clara-based global leader in nanomanufacturing technology, will support clean renewable energy equivalent to 70% of the output of one large-scale wind turbine on an annual basis. Applied Materials’ renewable power commitment of 2,279 MWh’s annually is the largest clean power commitment to date in the Santa Clara Green Power program.

Through its purchase, Applied Materials has become a member of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Green Power Partnership for its Santa Clara facilities. The partnership is a voluntary program working to standardize green power procurement as part of best practice in corporate environmental management. Additional information is available at www.epa.gov/greenpower.

“Applied Materials recognizes the need to protect the environment and to conserve natural resources.  To that end, we include such considerations in the products and services that we deliver to our customers, and in our presence in the community”, said Norm Armour, Corporate Vice President of Corporate Asset Services.  “The SVP/EPA Green Power Partnership provides a logical way for us to participate with others in pursuing the goals of good environmental stewardship.”

Applied Material’s clean power commitment will provide environmental savings by preventing the release of more than 2.2 million pounds of carbon dioxide, a key greenhouse gas. The savings are equivalent to planting 308 acres of forest or removing 199 cars from the road for a year.  On behalf of Applied Materials, SVP will purchase renewable energy credits from newly constructed wind farms and solar photovoltaic projects located within California.  In addition, a portion of their Santa Clara Green Power ratewill support new solar facility installations in the City of Santa Clara, such as the Haman Elementary School project.

“Applied Materials is among the leading Santa Clara businesses committed to a clean energy future for our community,” said Joyce Kinnear, Public Benefit Program Manager for Silicon Valley Power.  “Business participation in Santa Clara Green Power significantly increases the overall environmental benefit of the program and raises community awareness.”
