Silicon Valley Power Dedicates Donald Von Raesfeld Power Plant on June 15, 2005

Santa Clara, Calif. – June 15, 2005 – Silicon Valley Power (SVP), the City of Santa Clara's municipal electric utility, dedicates its new Donald Von Raesfeld Power Plant (DVR) today, starting with a 10:30 a.m. celebration. The dedication takes place at 850 Duane Avenue in the City of Santa Clara. The 147-megawatt power plant utilizes two combustion gas turbines with heat recovery steam generators and one steam turbine, representing state-of-the-art, clean and efficient combined-cycle generation technology.

With no public opposition during the 11-month licensing process, the California Energy Commission (CEC) awarded SVP its license for DVR on September 9, 2003. DVR began construction the very next day and was completed in less than 19 months. DVR began commercial operation on March 24, 2005, making it the first new power plant in California to go commercial since August 2003. DVR is the largest municipal project in the history of the City of Santa Clara.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony and celebration officially dedicates this facility to the residents and businesses of Santa Clara and acknowledges the power plant's namesake, Donald Von Raesfeld, former City Manager and City Council Member for the City of Santa Clara. Von Raesfeld serves as guest speaker for the dedication. City Mayor Patricia Mahan, City Manager Jennifer Sparacino and SVP Director Junona Jonas also are making presentations, honoring the City of Santa Clara's staff and providing some insight as to why the plant is so valuable in today's energy situation. Refreshments and tours of the new power plant follow.

Responding to anticipated reductions in SVP's large contract with the Western Area Power Administration (WAPA) last year, DVR fills the gap by directly satisfying about one-third of the City of Santa Clara's power needs and contributes to SVP's diverse power generation portfolio of both renewable and non-renewable sources.

DVR sits on approximately two acres in an industrial area of Santa Clara, adjacent to SVP's Kifer Receiving Station, allowing for easy and efficient interconnection to the local transmission system. It also is located next to the City of Santa Clara's recycled water line, allowing the power plant to use the recycled water for cooling.

“This state-of-the-art, combined-cycle power plant fits in perfectly with SVP's mostly renewable energy portfolio. DVR also works well to protect Santa Clara customers from costly transmission congestion charges and increasing reserve requirements,” says Junona Jonas, Director of SVP. “As an efficient and flexible resource, DVR supports the City of Santa Clara's long-standing goal of providing a highly reliable and independent source of energy at low, stable rates.”
