A special ceremony will be held on Sunday, April 23, 2006 to remember those killed in the horrific earthquake of April 1906 that destroyed Agnews Insane Asylum and caused the deaths of 117 patients and staff.
The ceremony will take place at the Mission City Memorial Park Chapel, 420 N. Winchester Blvd. in Santa Clara from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. A representative from Santa Clara University will remember the students and priests who rushed from the college to Agnews to aid the earthquake victims. Honorary City Historian Lorie Garcia will tell the story of the events that took place at the Asylum that fateful day and will conclude with a reading of the names of the people who perished there.
Attendees may view a picture display with dramatic photographs of the Asylum before and after the earthquake and visit the memorial and graves of the earthquake victims buried in Santa Clara’s town cemetery. This event is free and open to the public. |
