SANTA CLARA, Calif. – March 14, 2007 – Westfield Valley Fair, part of the largest retail property group in the world, has joined Santa Clara Green Power, a renewable energy program sponsored by Silicon Valley Power (SVP), the City of Santa Clara’s municipal electric utility. Westfield Valley Fair’s purchase of 1,608,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of clean renewable energy, derived from new wind and solar generation sources in California, is equivalent to one half the annual output of one large-scale wind turbine.
This wind and solar energy commitment is aligned with Westfield’s lighting retrofit and efficiency projects established across the nation; the company expects to save approximately 30 million kWh of electricity per year. Although Valley Fair already has energy conservation programs in place, its renewable energy investment is a new addition to its overall energy footprint. Annually, this commitment prevents the release of more than 1.6 million pounds of carbon dioxide, a key greenhouse gas. The environmental benefit of a purchase this size is equivalent to planting 217 acres of forest or removing 140 cars from the road for a year.
“We’re proud of Westfield Valley Fair’s commitment to renewable power as it supports sustainable, healthy communities for our shoppers and employees,” says Kurt Utterback, General Manager Westfield Valley Fair. “Santa Clara Green Power gives us the opportunity to participate in a local program and protect the environment at the same time.”
By joining Santa Clara Green Power, Westfield becomes a member of U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Green Power Partnership and joins the growing circle of other large businesses in Santa Clara that support renewable energy, including Agilent Technologies, Cisco, Yahoo! and Applied Materials, as well as Santa Clara University. In addition, more than 120 small businesses and 2,800 households are participating.
“International companies like Westfield bring greater awareness to the program and help to further our goal of supporting California’s development of clean energy resources,” says Joyce Kinnear, Public Benefit Program Manager for SVP. “We are proud of the strong business support for renewable energy in the Santa Clara community.” |
