| International Swim Center |
The George F. Haines International Swim Center is home to the Santa Clara Swim Club, the premier swim club in the South Bay, founded in 1951 by George Haines, considered internationally to be one of the best swim coaches in history. An article in USA Swimming's "Splash" magazine (July/August 2005 issue), written by Diane Spivak, talks about the legacy of the Santa Clara Swim Club, swim coach George F. Haines, and the City of Santa Clara's International Swim Center. Santa Clara's International Swim Center is also home to the world famous Santa Clara Aquamaids. The Aquamaids have produced more than 58% of all the Olympic Synchronized Swimmers representing the USA since synchronized swimming became an Olympic sport. Synchronized swimming emerged as an exhibition sport at the Olympic Games from 1948 to 1968, then debuted as a full medal sport in Los Angeles in 1984.

| Swim Center Renamed To Honor
Swim Club Founder |
The
Santa Clara International Swim Center was formally renamed
the George F. Haines International Swim Center in June
2000 in honor of the legendary founder of the Santa Clara
Swim Club who is considered by many to be the greatest
swimming coach of all time. Shown in the photo are George
F. Haines and Pablo Morales at the dedication ceremony
naming the International Swim Center in honor of Haines.
Haines trained more than 50 Olympians, and his swimmers
won 35 Olympic Gold, 11 Silver, and 7 Bronze medals. His
celebrated swimmers read like a roll call of America's
greatest - Don Schollander, Donna de Varona, Chris Van
Saltza, Mark Spitz, Karen Moe Thornton, Steve Clark, Dick
Roth, and Claudia Kolb Thomas, among others. He served
as a United States Olympic Coach at seven Olympiads.
Haines founded the Santa Clara Swim Club in 1951 and,
during his 24-year tenure, club swimmers won an unprecedented
43 AAU national championships and set numerous world records.
He also served as the swimming coach at Santa Clara High
School, and his team there also established a phenomenal
record including 19 league championships, 13 CCS titles,
and winning 213 consecutive dual meets. As a college coach,
his NCAA teams at UCLA and Stanford also achieved impressive
records and he was named NCAA coach of the year in 1975. |
