New Power Plant Ensures Reliability, Reasonable Energy Prices

The new Donald Von Raesfeld Power Plant launched March 21, 2005, was the first plant to go on the power grid in California since August 2003.

The DVR Power Plant adds 147 megawatts of power to the electricity generated locally by Silicon Valley Power, the City’s electric utility. It directly satisfies about one-third of the City’s power needs and helps to ensure reliable energy at reasonable prices for Santa Clara customers.

“This new power plant is the right size to support Santa Clara’s longstanding goal of providing a highly reliable and independent source of energy at low rates,” said Mayor Mahan. “With energy independence, our electric rates are 30 to 40 percent lower than most other Silicon Valley communities. Our customers saved more than $60 million last year due to lower energy costs within Santa Clara.”

Constructed in just 19 months, the DVR Power Plant uses technology approved by the Bay Area Air Quality Management District and recycled water for cooling.
