Attention homeowners! Do you know
how to shut off the water to your home? If you have a leak
or need to make repairs, knowing how and where to turn off
your water can be a very good thing to know. Most houses have
a "house valve" which allows the water to the house
to be shut off. The house valve is normally located at the
front of the house usually near a hose bib. Look for a pipe
coming out of the ground and going into the house with a shut
off valve on it.
If you cannot find a house valve or the house valve does
not work, the City also has a valve that can shut off the
water to your home. If you call the City Water and Sewer Utilities
at 615-2000, a City technician will turn the water off at
the meter for you.
Although you may be tempted to just turn the water off at
the meter yourself, this is not allowed. The water meter and
valve at the street are City property. Only the City's trained
technicians are allowed to work on or use this shut off valve.
The valve at the meter can be damaged if the valve is not
operated properly. If a resident or plumber does damage the
valve, the property owner may be responsible to pay for the
repairs to the service. Please call the City! Our technicians
are happy to come to your home to shut off or turn on your
water. A technician can usually respond to customer service
calls in less than 30 minutes. There is no charge for the
City's technician to turn the water on or off for you to make
repairs. |
