| Water services are provided to residents
and businesses in the City of Santa Clara by the Water Utility.
The Water System consists of more than 295 miles of water mains,
27 wells and seven storage tanks with more than 27 million gallons
of water capacity.
Sources available to the City include an extensive underground
aquifer (tapped by the wells) and imported water supplies
delivered by two wholesale water agencies: The Santa
Clara Valley Water District (SCVWD) and San Francisco
Hetch-Hetchy System.
About 34% of the City's water comes from these imported treated
water supplies. About 11% of the City's water is recycled water
used for irrigation. This is highly treated water delivered
through a separate piping system from the Water Pollution
Control Plant.
A water recharge program administered by SCVWD from local
reservoirs and imported water enhances the dependability of
the underground aquifer.

| A Portion of the City Receives Fluoridated Water |
| The City of Santa Clara has three sources
of drinking water, groundwater, and water purchased from the
Santa Clara Valley water district and the San Francisco Water
Department.
In late Fall 2005, the San Francisco Water Department
began to supplement the amount of fluoride already present
so that drinking water they provide will meet the level of
fluoride recommended by the California Department of Health
Services. Only the customers in the section of the City of
Santa Clara that is served with water originating from the
San Francisco Water Department’s Hetch Hetchy system
receive fluoridated water service; see map
below for details. Other water customers in the City receive
water from other sources, such as City-owned wells and another
wholesaler.

If you are in the area that receives fluoridated water
at least part of the time, please note that:
- There will be no change in the taste, odor or appearance
of your water.
- You and your children no longer need to take fluoride
supplements such as pills or drops. Dosage in the fluoridated
water delivered to your home may not be optimal. Check with
your physician or dentist.
- Fluoridated water benefits people of all ages.
