If a Traffic Light Isn't Working Come to a Complete Stop

With the potential for accidents or severe weather conditions impacting our power supply, there is a need for all drivers to be aware of what to do when encountering a traffic signal that has become inoperative. Following these basic rules will keep you safe.

When a traffic signal is not working, the intersection becomes a 4-way stop. The California Vehicle Code requires drivers to stop at an intersection when the signals are not working. Only after stopping may the driver proceed with caution when it is safe to do so.

When two or more vehicles approach an intersection from different roadways at the same time, the driver of the vehicle on the left should yield the right-of-way to the vehicle on his or her immediate right.

Failure to follow these fundamental rules of the road may result in a serious accident. Being alert and following these rules will help to keep Santa Clara roadways and intersections safe when traffic signals are not functioning properly.
