When and where are auditions for "Disney's Beauty and the Beast?"
Auditions are January 9 and 10, from 3:30-6:30PM. Please plan to have your child arrive a few minutes before 3:30, and plan on having them stay until 6:30PM. Auditions are in the Mary Louise Mello Auditorium at the Community Recreation Center, 969 Kiely Blvd in Santa Clara.

What do I need to do before “Disney's Beauty and the Beast" auditions?
Please enroll in the class Youth Production: Disney's Beauty and the Beast (#11799) before auditions. City of Santa Clara Resident Online and Walk-In registration for this activity begins December 5, 2017. Go to apm.activecommunities.com/santaclara to set up your account and register.

 

Please download, print and complete the “Disney's Beauty and the Beast” Rehearsal Schedule Conflict Calendar. Don't forget to bring your completed Conflict Calendar with you to auditions. Our staff will review your Conflict Calendar before you begin your audition. Participation in auditions depends upon staff acceptance of your rehearsal schedule conflicts.

Please wear loose, comfortable clothing, as the first part of your audition will be a dance audition. If you have ballet or jazz dance shoes, please wear them. If you do not have dance shoes, please wear closed-toe athletic shoes. For safety reasons, we cannot allow anyone wearing sandals, flip-flops, or other open-toe shoes to participate in auditions.

Please prepare a 1-minute audition song. For advanced performers, this should be a song from traditional Musical Theatre for which you bring sheet music in the correct key for your voice. Beginning and intermediate performers may sing any song you know well, a capella (without accompaniment). You may also bring an audio CD with accompaniment (no vocals in recording, please).

I have no previous experience. Is this the right production for me? Will I be cast in the show?
Yes! We welcome and encourage new-comers to audition for our shows. You will not be the only new person at auditions. Our long-time participants will welcome you and help you feel comfortable in our group. We are here to have fun and make new friends, so all new people are very welcome to join us. The audition process is our chance to get to know you and to see what your performance skills are at this time. This is a no-pressure audition, because everyone who auditions will be cast in the show. We only hold auditions to help us decide which role is right for you.

What will I do at the audition?
You will start by learning a brief dance routine. After you learn the dance, you will perform it in a small group with other participants in your age group. We do not expect a perfect dance audition. We just want to see the best you can do. After the dance audition, you will go on stage in small groups with other actors in your age group to act in a short scene from the play. Before your acting audition, our director will work with you to help you speak loudly enough to be heard. Finally, you will sing the song you prepared for your audition. That’s it! Next, you will come to our first rehearsal on Tuesday, January 16, 2018, 4:15-6:30pm.

When will I find out what part I will play in the show?
At our first rehearsal on Tuesday, January 16, 2018, 4:15-6:30pm. You will also receive our detailed rehearsal schedule at the first rehearsal.

Is there a fee to be in the show?
Yes. Please enroll in the class Youth Production: Disney's Beauty and the Beast (#11799) before attending auditions (see first paragraph).

What is the Parent Meeting?
The parent meeting is required for all families who are participating in Roberta Jones Junior Theatre for the first time, or for families who have not had to attend a parent meeting with us before. For instance, if your child was in a summer production, there was no parent meeting, so you will need to attend the parent meeting for this production. Our staff will review some important information you need to know about our production, and answer your questions. Your family will only need to attend this meeting once. The parent meeting for this show is Tuesday evening, January 16, 2018 from 7:00-8:00pm, in the same location as our auditions-- the Mary Louise Mello Auditorium in the Community Recreation Center.

What is the costume requirement?
You will be responsible for providing the costumes for your child. We will give you specific instructions to follow on your child's Costume Design Sheet. Our Costume Designer will be available to answer your questions by email, and will be present for at least one rehearsal per week to answer questions in person. Many costumes require sewing. We can help you look for people to hire if no one in your family knows how to sew.

What is the Roberta Jones Junior Theatre Grant Program?
Roberta Jones Junior Theatre offers our Grant Program as a way to help families who require financial assistance to afford to participate in our program. The Junior Theatre Grant Application can be downloaded here, or you may pick up a printed copy at the Community Recreation Center registration desk. We offer a $100 maximum grant per child per calendar year. To qualify for the grant, your child must be a resident of the City of Santa Clara, and be enrolled in the Free or Reduced Lunch Program, or the Latchkey Program with the Santa Clara Unified or Cupertino School District.

I really want to play “Belle” or “The Beast” (etc.) in the show. Is it going to be enjoyable to participate if I don’t get the part I want?
Yes! We encourage everyone to accept and embrace the fact that most people in our cast will be in the chorus, which is great fun. You are going to learn a lot of songs, dances, and get to be in a significant amount of the show. There is a lot for everyone to do. While you might be disappointed at first, please trust us that you will eventually have a great time no matter what role you play in the production. Staying in the show, even if you are disappointed with your role, is the best way for you to learn, grow, and possibly play a larger role in a future production. If you drop out because you didn’t get the role you wanted you will miss out on a lot of fun and special memories with good friends. We have no “stars” or “divas” at RJJT, and we hope everyone who auditions will come with a cooperative, positive attitude that the show must go on!
