The Roberta Jones Junior Theatre College Scholarship is a $500 Scholarship to be awarded to an outstanding Roberta Jones Junior Theatre participant. Roberta Jones highly valued education, and this scholarship is awarded in honor of her dedication to Junior Theatre participants, and the encouragement she gave to all participants to attend college. The scholarship is awarded each year to students who meet the scholarship criteria. Roberta Jones Junior Theatre is a program of the City of Santa Clara Parks and Recreation Department. Funds for the Roberta Jones Junior Theatre College Scholarship come from Roberta Jones Junior Theatre fundraisers and donations to the Roberta Jones Junior Theatre program.
The Roberta Jones Junior Theatre College Scholarship is awarded based on outstanding participation in the Junior Theatre program. It is available for any participants who have participated as cast or crew members in productions of Roberta Jones Junior Theatre. The following are the three requirements for qualifying for the scholarship:
- Acceptance to a college for the following academic year. This may be an accredited Junior College or 4-year University. An acceptance letter will have to be provided by the student in order to receive the scholarship payment. Students may receive the scholarship once, no later than two years after High School graduation.
- Participation in at least 5 Roberta Jones Junior Theatre productions while in grades 9-12. These may include participation as a cast or crew member (not staff member) in Youth Production, CATS, and Springboard Theatre productions.
- Outstanding volunteer work, of at least 20 hours, for Roberta Jones Junior Theatre, beyond required hours for participation. This may include volunteer work as an assistant in Imagine Me classes, or at the Junior Theatre Face Painting Booths, or Technical Crew for Miss Santa Clara, Dance Recital, Showtime, FACE Show or other programs when Junior Theatre provides technical assistance. Extra volunteer hours for set-building/painting for Junior Theatre productions, help with Cast Paging, Props Crew, Make-Up Crew, etc. will also be considered.
The recipients of the Roberta Jones Junior Theatre College Scholarship will be determined by an interview panel consisting of the City of Santa Clara Recreation Manager and a Recreation Supervisor. After applications are reviewed, finalists will be interviewed. Recipients will be announced in June 2017, in the program of the RJJT Springboard Theatre production.
