Imagine yourself in a space station, floating as you see the earth below. Attendees of the STEM Innovation Bowl will be able to don a virtual reality headset outfitted with a motion controller and for a couple minutes become an astronaut. The motion controller senses hand movements and allows actual interaction with virtual objects—the buttons of the space station and tools—while weightless in a zero gravity environment. This is one of the many interactive exhibits at Santa Clara’s STEM Innovation Bowl, which will be held January 30, 2016 at the Central Park Library from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm and feature:

As part of the Countdown to Kick-off, the event celebrates Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) with the theme “Experience from Afar.” Super Bowl 50 will be watched by millions of people on TVs and laptops streaming content, but what’s in store for future football games? The STEM Innovation Bowl will demonstrate the future of immersive technology and highlight virtual reality, augmented reality, telepresence robots, computer vision, 3D video, gaming and Santa Clara’s interactive map tool, MapSantaClara. Presentations will delve into the technologies. View a schedule of the presentations.

Recommended for grades 6 and up. Younger grades should be accompanied by an adult. Younger grades will enjoy the Innovation Stations---hands-on areas---where kids can learn about circuit boards, build with blocks and straws, create mosaics using math, interact with robots and launch rockets.

The Santa Clara Library and Information Technology Departments have created this event through a partnership with innovative local tech companies.
