About the Project
The City of Santa Clara has conducted extensive public outreach to install bicycle facilities on Lafayette Street between Laurelwood Road and Reed Street. The Bicycle Plan Update 2018 design recommendation for the segment is a Class IV protected bicycle lane.
In order to install a Class IV protected bicycle lane, on-street parking on Lafayette Street between Memorex Drive and Parker Street will need to be removed. A parking analysis was conducted to demonstrate how the parking removal will affect parking availability in the adjacent neighborhood. The parking analysis results, and project concepts were shared at several public meetings. On September 12, 2023, City Council voted to remove parking to install a Class IV protected bicycle lane as part of a pilot project.
Below is a history of the project:
- July 13, 2021: The Lafayette Street Protected Bikeway project was approved at the City Council meeting (Report to Council 21-326). This project was identified in the City's Bicycle Plan Update 2018 and would promote the use of bicycling within Santa Clara.
- August 2021: The City mailed letters to properties along Lafayette Street between Memorex Drive and Reed Street to notify the public of potential removal of street parking along the west side of Lafayette Street.
- January 2022: The City collected parking occupancy data.
- March 2022: The City completed a parking study.
- May 4, 2022: The City held the first Community Meeting.
- July 28, 2022: The City held the second Community Meeting.
- September 29, 2022: The City held the third Community Meeting.
- January 23, 2023: Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee Meeting
