COVID-19 Vaccination Information

The County of Santa Clara Public Health Department recommends all residents get vaccinated if eligible. All individuals age five and older who live, work, or attend school in Santa Clara County are eligible to be vaccinated. 

  • COVID-19 vaccinations for children ages 5-11 are now available in Santa Clara County. Currently, the Pfizer vaccine is the only option for this newly approved age group.
  • Parents and guardians should visit sccfreevax.org to sign up for an appointment or to find a convenient drop-in location. 
  • Youth ages 12-17 need to provide a signed consent form from a parent or legal guardian. For County-operated sites, the consent form is available online
  • Booster shots for all vaccines are now available to those 12 and up. Additionally, if you received the Pfizer vaccines as your initial COVID-19 vaccine series, you can now get a booster 5 months after your second dose instead of 6 months.  
  • Third doses of COVID-19 vaccines available to individuals with immunocompromised systems

County of Santa Clara Now Offering Bivalent COVID-19 Booster Appointments at all County Vaccination Locations: On Sept. 9, 2022 the County of Santa Clara announced it is now taking appointments for the bivalent COVID-19 booster vaccine for its mass vaccination locations and local clinics. COVID-19 vaccination appointments for the initial series and the new bivalent boosters are available through the County’s website at www.sccfreevax.org. View the news release.

County of Santa Clara Provides COVID-19 vaccinations for Children ages 5-11 following the November 2 approval from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention: The County of Santa Clara has been prepared to administer vaccinations as soon as the federal government provided authorization. The first vaccinations in the County for the 5-11 age group began taking place Wednesday morning. Currently, the Pfizer vaccine is the only option for this newly approved age group, which numbers just over 167,000 members of our community. All children ages 5-11 who sign up for an appointment are eligible. View the news release.

COVID-19 Booster Shots for All Vaccines Now Available for Eligible Individuals in Santa Clara County: On Oct. 22, 2021, the County of Santa Clara Public Health Department announced COVID-19 Booster shots for all vaccines are available. Along with COVID-19 Pfizer booster vaccinations, the County will administer booster shots to those who received the Johnson & Johnson or Moderna vaccine and are eligible under CDC guidelines. County clinics are taking appointments at www.sccfreevax.org and everyone eligible is encouraged to receive a booster shot.

COVID-19 Pfizer Vaccine Boosters Available: On Sept. 24, 2021, Santa Clara County announced Pfizer boosters are available for individuals who received their second Pfizer dose at least six months ago and meet criteria established by the federal government. The CDC released recommendations for booster doses of the Pfizer vaccine for certain groups.

The CDC recommends:

  • people 65 years and older and residents in long-term care settings should receive a booster shot of Pfizer-BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine at least 6 months after their Pfizer-BioNTech primary series,
  • people aged 50–64 years with underlying medical conditions should receive a booster shot of Pfizer-BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine at least 6 months after their Pfizer-BioNTech primary series,
  • people aged 18–49 years with underlying medical conditions may receive a booster shot of Pfizer-BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine at least 6 months after their Pfizer-BioNTech primary series, based on their individual benefits and risks, and
  • people aged 18-64 years who are at increased risk for COVID-19 exposure and transmission because of occupational or institutional setting may receive a booster shot of Pfizer-BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine at least 6 months after their Pfizer-BioNTech primary series, based on their individual benefits and risks.

Third Doses Available for Immunocompromised: On Aug. 14, 2021, Santa Clara County announced that a third dose of COVID-19 vaccination is available for people who have a compromised immune system for Pfizer and Moderna. Eligible individuals should contact their primary healthcare provider. Appointments can be scheduled through the County’s website sccfreevax.org.  

Full Federal Approval of Pfizer COVID-19 Vaccination: The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) issued a statement on Aug. 23, 2021 following federal approval of the Pfizer BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine for individuals ages 16 and older.
