While some shifts in temperature and weather are natural, it is widely accepted that climate change has been driven by human activities that burn fossil fuels, like transportation and heating and cooling buildings. Emissions are also released from landfills and from clearing vegetated lands. Dangerous greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions such as carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N20) create a layer around the planet trapping in heat from the earth’s surface like the glass walls and ceiling of a greenhouse.

The impacts of climate change seen today, such as more extreme weather events, natural disasters and increased health risks, require bold action to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and ensure a healthy and livable future for all. Additionally, social equity and environmental justice must be an intentional component imbedded in climate solutions.

The City established a Climate Action Plan (CAP) in 2013. Now, the City is in the process conducting a complete CAP Update to reflect the more ambitious nature of the climate issues facing us today. This CAP will also help the City meet State mandates while setting bold targets specific to Santa Clara's unique community.

The City is committed to climate action at the local level to protect our community and to contribute to national and international change through climate leadership.
