Regulations Regarding Contributions Influencing Santa Clara City Elections

Ordinance No. 1979 (Dark Money Ordinance)

This ordinance, also known as the "Dark Money" Ordinance is intended to shine light on the origin of financial support for and against local election candidates and measures.

Information on Candidate Elections

  • Only registered voters who reside in District 1, 4, 5, or 6 may run for office (4 year terms)
  • Only registered voters, who reside in District 1, 4, 5, or 6, may vote for their respective candidates
  • The Chief of Police will continue to be elected at-large (4 year term)
  • The City Clerk will continue to be elected at-large (4 year term)

Measure E: Transit Occupancy Tax Rates

The Ballot Measure E reads as follows:

Transient Occupancy Tax Rates. To maintain and protect the level of essential city services including 9-1-1 emergency medical/disaster preparedness, police and fire protection, bicycle and pedestrian safety, roadways and storm drains, and other vital services including parks, recreation, libraries and senior services, shall a measure increasing the hotel tax rate up to 4%, generating up to approximately 7 million dollars annually, paid only by hotel/motel guests, until ended by voters, be adopted?
