Historic Resources

Here you will find information about Santa Clara’s historic resources program.

Historic Preservation Ordinance

The goal of the City’s Historic Preservation Ordinance (HPO) is to promote the identification, protection, enhancement and perpetuation of buildings, structures and properties within the City. Designated properties reflect special elements of the City’s social, economical, historical, architectural, engineering, archaeological, cultural, natural, or aesthetic heritage.

Historic Resource Inventory

A list of architecturally or historically significant resources is maintained as Appendix 8.9 of the General Plan. This list is known as the Historic Resource Inventory (HRI).

In order for a property to be placed on the HRI, it must meet the designation criteria outlined in City Code section 18.130.040. The Historical and Landmarks Commission reviews all nominations and provides a recommendation to the City Council. The inventory does not include all of the City's fine historical and architectural resources, as many structures have never been surveyed.

Historic Consultant List

For resource identification and project review under local, state, and federal rules, policies, and plans, the City relies on the work of qualified consultants who are contracted by private applicants and owners. Consultants regularly prepare Historic Resource Inventories (DPR) and Secretary of the Interior Standards analyses for proposed projects.

The list linked below may assist applicants with finding qualified consultants. There may be qualified historic resource consultants who are not listed here and the list should not be seen as all-inclusive. Applicants are free to contract for services with any qualified consultant.
