There are many reasonschild-matchbox children may experiment with fire. Due to their age and immaturity, they may struggle with the ability to make wise choices that would keep them safe around fire. If a child you care about has played with matches, lighters, candles, or fireworks, has set a fire or has shown curiosity about fire that worries you, it might be a good idea to get them involved in the Youth Firesetter Prevention and Intervention Program.

The program is for children ages 5-17 but younger children may be seen on a case by case basis. If a child is facing charges, attendance in an intervention program is often ordered as part of the deferment or sentencing.

The program consists of an initial assessment of the youth, a parent and child orientation meeting and (2) weekend workshops that discuss important life skills, building character, values, sound decision making skills and fire safety education and assistance in determining whether professional counseling might benefit the youth. A certificate is awarded at the completion of the program.

You can access the referral form for the program here and a YFPI specialist will contact you.
