AlertSCC is a free, easy, and confidential way for anyone who lives or works in Santa Clara County to get emergency warnings sent directly to their cell phone, mobile device, email, or landline. AlertSCC provides information and instructions in a variety of emergency situations, which may include:

• Flooding, wildfires and subsequent evacuations
• Public safety incidents, including crimes, that immediately affect your neighborhood
• Post-disaster information about shelters, transportation, or supplies

Warming Centers and Expanded Shelter Services

During inclement weather, warming centers, and expanded shelter services are available and a list of warming centers and shelters are available on the County of Santa Clara website.

• Call 2-1-1 for information on expanded shelters and additional services in Santa Clara County.

• Due to the rain and cold temperatures, especially in South Santa Clara County areas, the County Office of Supportive Housing is securing additional after-hours shelter beds for people experiencing homelessness. Call 408-278-6420 for help or to direct someone in need of assistance.
  
  
• In the event of an emergency, Inclement Weather Episodes and shelter availability, or housing-related issues, the Office of Supportive Housing has arranged with the County Office of Emergency Services to be able to send text messages to the homeless, service providers and anyone else who would like to receive the messages.  To be included in this messaging opportunity, send a text message BADWEATHER to 888777.

Help Prevent Localized Flooding in your Neighborhood

Water from your neighborhood enters the storm drain system and flows directly to local creeks and the Bay without any treatment. Pollutants make their way into the storm drains when carried by rain or other runoff.  

• Don't blow leaves and yard debris into the street where it can clog storm drain inlets. See information on street sweeping and how you can help prevent clogged storm drains. 
• Removed parked vehicles from the street on sweeping days to enable the sweeper to reach the gutter line. More information on Santa Clara's street sweeping program.

Preparing for Winter Weather

The City of Santa Clara takes many steps to prepare for the wet weather season including planning, debris removal and tree maintenance. The City reviews National Weather Service (NWS) reports and flood preparation reports from Valley Water. 

In advance of the rainy season, City staff remove debris from public storm drain inlets, conduct a leaf-vacuum program to remove leaves from the roadway that potentially clog catch basins and cause surface flooding. The City maintains storm drain pump stations in Santa Clara, cleans wetwells, trash racks and maintains back-up generators at pump station sites. Street tree maintenance activities are conducted on an ongoing basis and tree trimming adjacent to power lines is done to decrease the potential for fallen debris and downed power lines.
