Take a Survey!

The City of Santa Clara launches the first Vision Zero survey and we would like to hear about your experiences driving, biking, walking, or using other transportation modes within Santa Clara. Your input will be important to identify opportunities for safety improvements throughout Santa Clara! Please take a moment to fill out the survey. The survey will close on Monday, December 9.

Community Engagement

The City hosted the first community workshop on November 7, 2024. Thank you to all who participated in the meeting to provide input on the project. There will be more community workshops and opportunities to get involved.

What is Vision Zero?

Vision Zero is a strategy to eliminate all traffic fatalities and severe injuries, while increasing safe, healthy, equitable mobility for all. Vision Zero recognizes that people will sometimes make mistakes, so the road system and related policies should be designed to ensure those inevitable mistakes do not result in severe injuries or fatalities. Vision Zero is a multidisciplinary approach, bringing together diverse and necessary stakeholders to address this complex problem.

About the Vision Zero Plan

The Bicycle Plan Update 2018 and Pedestrian Master Plan 2019 identified the objective of developing a Citywide Vision Zero Policy. The City of Santa Clara received a Federal Safe Streets for All (SS4A) grant to develop a citywide Vision Zero Plan and policy. The Vision Zero Plan will target eliminating traffic deaths and severe injuries on city streets. The project will include collecting robust community input about roadway safety for all modes of transportation, identify locations for improvements through a lens of social equity, and explore countermeasures and strategies to enhance safety with a Safe System Approach. The project is anticipated to start in Summer 2024.

What is a Safe System Approach?

The U.S. Department of Transportation adopted the Safe System Approach as a guide to address roadway safety. The Safe System approach includes the following principles:

  1. Death and Serious Injuries are Unacceptable
  2. Humans Make Mistakes
  3. Humans are Vulnerable
  4. Responsibility is Shared
  5. Safety is Proactive
  6. Redundancy is Crucial
