Recycled Water Utility: A Drought-Proof Source for Santa Clara

The City operates and maintains 33-miles of recycled water pipelines supplying recycled water from the regional permit holder, South Bay Water Recycling. Purified water from Silicon Valley Advanced Water Purification Center is blended with tertiary recycled water produced at the San José - Santa Clara Regional Wastewater Facility to enhance Santa Clara's recycled water quality and expand its usage.

  • Recycled Water offset 19% that would have otherwise been potable water
  • 336 Active Recycled Water Customer Accounts, more in planning phases
    • 275 Irrigation sites: parks, schools, golf greens, medians
    • 41 Industrial sites: cooling towers, industrial processes
    • 43 Dual Plumb sites: toilets, urinals

Advanced Treatment

Further advanced treatment at the Silicon Valley Advanced Water Purification Center takes treated wastewater that would be discharged into San Francisco Bay and purifies it using:

  • Microfiltration
  • Reverse Osmosis
  • Ultraviolet Light Disinfection

With Advanced Oxidation, water produced at the center meets California's drinking water standards, though it is currently limited to non-potable use.
