Using your Water Meter to Detect a Leak

Leaks in foundations, walls, sprinkler systems or underground are harder to detect. Your meter may have a leak indicator (generally a small dial or wheel as pictured); if it's turning when ALL WATER IS OFF, you have a leak. If your meter doesn’t have a leak indicator, you can still use it to check for leaks in five easy steps:

  1. Turn off all water in the house & yard
  2. Locate your water meter
  3. Read the meter & record the reading
  4. After 15-20 minutes, re-check the meter
  5. Reading change? You have a leak

To calculate the extent of the leak:

  • Divide the change in number of cubic feet by the elapsed time, giving you the rate in cubic feet per hour.
  • Multiply the number of cubic feet per hour by 7.48 to get gallons per hour.
