Using your Water Meter to Detect a Leak
Leaks in foundations, walls, sprinkler systems or underground are harder to detect. Your meter may have a leak indicator (generally a small dial or wheel as pictured); if it's turning when ALL WATER IS OFF, you have a leak. If your meter doesn’t have a leak indicator, you can still use it to check for leaks in five easy steps:
|
To calculate the extent of the leak:
- Divide the change in number of cubic feet by the elapsed time, giving you the rate in cubic feet per hour.
- Multiply the number of cubic feet per hour by 7.48 to get gallons per hour.

City Leak Assistance
Free leak check: Call (408) 615-2000. City technicians perform leak checks at the meter, but will not enter your property. It is your responsibility to fix the leak with a plumber's help at the property owner’s discretion.
Leak Credit: The City of Santa Clara offers a Leak Credit to customers who find private leaks and fix them in a timely manner. Water usage during a leak will be compared with the same period in the previous three (3) years and the City may rebate up to 50% of the overage. Please fill out the application. Contact the Water & Sewer Utilities at water@santaclaraca.gov or 408-615-2000, Option 2, for more info.
