Hydrant Flushing will occur soon in neighborhoods from
Pruneridge Avenue and Homestead Road to Pomeroy Avenue and Lawrence Expressway.

You may observe crews opening fire hydrants to flush out water mains in your neighborhood this season. A common practice used by water agencies, flushing is the most effective way to keep water quality at the highest levels possible.

Hydrant flush progression: 1. Dirty water 2. Clear water 3. Full flush

Flushing water lines:

  • Safeguards water quality
  • Removes sediment & minerals
  • Prevents water stagnation
  • Ensures proper water flow for fire protection
Sign stating: Flushing our water mains provides you the highest water quality possible.

Flushing effectively scours water pipes by increasing water velocity beyond typical operating standard inside the main.
As a result, you may notice temporary discoloration, cloudiness or sediment in your water; if this occurs, allow water to run from an outdoor hose bib until it clears.

Flushed water is dechlorinated before being discharged into storm drains that flow through our watershed to San Francisco Bay.

An added public safety benefit, flushing exercises hydrant valves, ensuring that they fully open and close properly. This helps us identify potential structural issues with pipes and valves so they can be put on a repair schedule if needed.

Santa Clara Water & Sewer Utilities is committed to conservation; we only flush to the extent necessary to achieve high water quality standards.
